Picture of Kristen Wiig Greeting Fans Goes Viral

Comedian Kristen Wiig is known for her work on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Her new film, Ghostbusters, is a reboot of the classic 1984 film of the same name. Wiig plays Erin Gilbert, who writes a book claiming that ghosts are real. When ghosts invade Manhattan, Wiig’s character teams up with Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), and Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) to save the world.

Ghostbusters premiered Saturday, July 9, in Los Angeles. Comedian and podcaster Zach Heltzel tweeted a photo of Wiig greeting fans at the premiere. The photo shows two young girls staring at Wiig in awe, while dressed in Ghostbusters garb. Heltzel adds a sarcastic comment that the girls’ childhood “is ruined” because of the female cast, when they are clearly overjoyed.

One twitter user shared a tweet comparing Wiig’s photo with those of Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) and Melissa Benoist (Supergirl).

Initially, the cast of the film received a backlash, because all four of the leading actors are women. From these pictures, it is clear to see that having women as the leads in movies is crucial. Young girls need to believe that they can be “the heroes” too.

In a majority of films, men play the lead and women are just background characters. Ghostbusters twists things up by having men as background characters instead. Chris Hemsworth plays Kevin Beckman, who is the assistant of the Ghostbusters team. It’s exciting to see that movies are adapting to fit this generation. We are happy that situations are changing and that women are representing in films and TV more!
